Advancing Personalized Medicine

Drew’s indoctrination to personalized medicine began in the 1990’s. At Incyte Genomics, Drew participated in private efforts to sequence the first draft of the human genome. As General Manager of Incyte Microarray Systems, Drew fostered development of gene and protein expression measurement technologies. During this same time period, Drew also participated in efforts to develop the first molecular clinical assays for measuring viral loads in HIV patients. In May 2000, subsequent to these efforts, the first public announcement was made of the sequencing of the complete draft of the human genome.

The resulting revolution in genomics, informatics and functional biology has enabled a new era in personalized medicine and Drew remains an active participant. Drew is currently working with companies such as Genomic Health to develop molecular diagnostics that enable physicians to confidently identify patients who are most likely to benefit from aggressive treatments, such as chemotherapy or organ transplantation. On the biopharmaceutical development side, Drew is working with companies such as Bullet Biotechnology, to develop novel drugs tailored specifically to individual patients.



The resulting avalanche of data from these emerging genomic, genetic, proteomic, and computational pathology technologies has required the rapid development of novel biostatistics and bioinformatics methods in order to yield unprecedented new insights and knowledge into human disease.
